The international trade in children is perhaps the darkest aspect to human trafficking. According to the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking, “children are trafficked for forced labour, domestic work, as child soldiers, as camel jockeys, for begging, work on construction sites and plantations but most children are trafficked for sexual exploitation.”
In 2006, the US State Department estimated that a shocking one million children are exploited in the global sex trade. But what happens after these children are ‘rescued’? The cannot return to a ‘normal’ life as if nothing has happened.
