WATCH: Thank A Teacher Today

We’ve all moaned about getting up for school in the morning and faked stomach aches to get out of classes. What could be fun about being tested on things that just don’t matter to you or exposed for your lack of knowledge in front of all your friends and peers? We’ve all spent our time watching TV shows when we’re supposed to be studying for a big exam and we’ve all secretly texted under the tables during class. We take for granted this incredible opportunity we’ve been given to get an education – an opportunity unavailable to many in the world – and for that a lot of us don’t deserve to be treated with the patience and guidance that our teachers offered us.

But there they were, every morning, putting up with our lack of effort and our grumpy teenage faces. Without us even realising it, the men and women standing at the front of the classroom (the people you were sure were out to make your life that much more difficult for you), they were shaping our lives in a way we could never have imagined. And that’s really what makes teachers so gracious in every way, isn’t it?  They don’t take any credit for how much of an impact they have had on your lives and they let you move on into the big, bad world thinking it was all your own hard work.

Having a great teacher makes all the difference. All teachers are brilliant and selfless people in their own way, but most of us have had one teacher who really made a difference and was a great teacher. It’s difficult for us to realise how important these people are when we’re still in school, but there comes a day when it finally hits us: it wasn’t all me, I didn’t get through 12 years of school because I powered through on my own, I made it through school because I was supported and shaped as a person by some incredible people who never once made me feel like I owed them anything – despite the fact that everything I am today is all thanks to their unceasing commitment and dedication to us.
