The video, by Cut, asked a variety of women aged between 15 and 50, from all walks of life, what their first response is when they hear the word ‘Abortion’.
The interviewees offered a range of frank opinions and emotional responses. It starts with a 16-year-old girl saying: “Horrible. If you’re given the gift of a baby, then you should treasure that gift.”
Followed by a 21-year-old’s reply: “Choice. It’s a controversial one but ultimately everyone has their own reasons.”
A 31-year-old says: “Pain. No matter what choice a woman makes, it’s a painful decision.”
While many of the women responded with words like “killing”, “horrible” and “wrong”, others reacted differently, using words like “necessary”, “choice” and “controversial”. To quote a 26-year-old woman featured in the video, “It’s a choice but it needs to be handled very carefully and not lightly”.
The Abortion Laws vary from country to country. For example, in China, abortion is virtually freely available and there are no defined time limits for access to the procedure but The Egyptian Penal Code of 1937 bans abortion in all circumstances, but criminal law allows flexibility on grounds of “necessity”.
The three-and-a-half-minute video is empowering and enlightening: The opinions about reproductive rights were as diverse as the women themselves.
