The income gap between rich and poor in the UK has been growing over the past 30 years. Today British inequality has reached its highest levels seen since World War II. Despite this, British people are unaware of how serious inequality in their society really is.
The project Inequality Briefing carried out a poll on over 2000 British adults. Each respondent was asked how wealth should ideally be distributed, and how it is actually distributed. The results show clear underestimations of the realities of the situation.
A similar project was carried out in the US last year, demonstrating the same lack of awareness around inequalities in society. Inequality Briefing aims to continue this work by carrying out more research concerning issues such as working poverty, the richest 1% and the cost of inequality in society.
