Each evening we sit down for a meal. We rarely think about where our food comes from, how much it costs us or what we will do with our leftovers. As part of the Your WorldView Thought for Food season, independent filmmakers and writers were invited to submit films and articles that focus on food, the world’s consumption and the stories behind the food we eat.
One short film by Giselle Santos focuses on life in Manila and ‘pagpag’. The opening scenes of restaurants and left over food are quickly followed by people searching through rubbish bags and food bins to retrieve whatever left over food they can. They will then later sell it in bags to those who can’t afford food, known as ‘pagpag’. This re-used food is the only way for some to make a living and for others to afford to feed their families.
The meat is then cleaned, boiled, bagged and sold. so perhaps next time we sit down for a meal we may just be a little bit more thoughtful about the food we eat and its impact on peoples lives.
