After escaping a violent relationship, author and activist Amy Logan began a decade long journey into researching the origins and history of honour killing. What she discovered is that it has not always been a man’s world, thus bringing us to realise our present does not have to be our future.
Honour killings don’t make the news nearly as much as it should. According to the Honour Based Violence Awareness Network, 5000 honour killings take place every year.
However, it is important to note that that figure only takes into account the number of honour killings that are reported. The reality of the situation is that many of these killings go unreported and many women around the world are still at risk.
The issue of honour in many Eastern cultures is a complicated one, making this particular human rights issue a difficult one to combat. Amy Logan has dedicated her life to trying to understand the origins of honour killings in order to come one step closer to putting an end to them altogether. In her recent TEDx talk, Amy explains what she has uncovered so far about this age old practice.
