The G8, otherwise known as the Group of Eight, is an assembly of world leaders who meet annually to discuss global issues. Each year, the G8 holds a Leaders’ Summit, in which Heads of State and Government of member countries meet to discuss and attempt to reconcile global issues.
This year, leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, USA and UK will meet at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland for the G8 Summit 17-18 June. This year, the main agenda set forward by British PM David Cameron is:
- advancing trade
- ensuring tax compliance
- promoting greater transparency
The outcomes of G8 summits greatly influence major policy on everything from international politics, the environment, war, and finance. The summits always garner a huge amount of controversy, and activists from around the world always descend on the host venue.
