Stuck is a new award-winning documentary film covering the real-life stories of children and parents navigating the international adoption system – a frequently tumultuous sea of bureaucratic and legal hazards in which families can be disrupted for political gain alone. For instance, Russia passed a law at the end of last year banning American families from adopting Russian children, affecting roughly 700 children who were in the process of being adopted, many of whom had met and bonded with their prospective families.
Despite the US Senate’s recent support for measures protecting such families, the international adoption process still takes three years and can cost up to $28,000. During that process, children and prospective parents are at near-constant risk of legal changes. Conditions in certain orphanages can be appalling, with children stacked in rows.
