Every day people climb dangerously deep into the ground to support themselves as coal miners. The film Coal Boy tells the story of a boy in the Jaintia Hills in northeast India who was born into this fate. Most people can never leave the mines, but the boy still dares to imagine a different life. “I have dreams too,” he says. “I will be somebody some day. I have the courage. One day I will dig through to the other side of the earth.”
The film, directed by Chandrasekhar Reddy, is one of 33 short films from Why Poverty?. The organisation is using films to raise awareness around poverty, to pose questions, create more debate and engage people in finding a solution to global poverty.
