It has taken one young person to finally catch the attention of the country and make them realise the urgency behind the need for school’s to have sex education. Yas Necati, 17, has spoken out against the lack of support available to young people in regards to sex and relationships, urging David Cameron to do something about it.
The lack of adequate sex education means that more and more young people are learning about their bodies through the internet. With no where else to turn and no one to go to with the questions they have during a highly confusing time, they are forced to turn to the digital world of cyber space. It is in this world that they are often given false and far-fetched ideas about what sex should be like. It is this same world that gives them unrealistic expectations and an increasing sense of pressure.
17-year-old Yas has taken the initiative to put an end to the way young people learn about sex and relationships. Highlighting the fact that sex education guidelines for teachers were last updated in 2000, she is urging the government to take steps towards updating this extremely crucial, yet outdated, system. The current guidelines hold no mention of the online world, ignoring issues such as pornography and cyber bullying. She is now calling on the Prime Minister to put together a group of young people, teachers, professionals and online experts to get together and re-write these guidelines.
