The 15th of March will mark the 3rd anniversary of the start of the bloody Syrian conflict where more than 10,000 children have been killed, 1 million forced to seek asylum in neighbouring countries and a further 3 million internally displaced.
Save the Children produced a powerful video showing how the life of a British girl would change if a civil war would happen in the UK. The video, that quickly became viral, shows a second of each day in the year of a children’s life and it aims to raise awareness of what the life of children currently living in war looks like.
The video begins by showing a healthy young girl, enjoying her life together with friends and family. A few seconds through the video there is a TV in the background announcing ‘violent clashes’ near her house. Things start to change rapidly and the parents are forced to pack their things and leave home.
From that moment on, there is no electricity, food or medicine. Her happy life is replaced with the sound of bombs, gun shots and rebels fighting. The little girl, who was enjoying life, has to live homeless, terrified, unhealthy, and by the end of the video she is separated from her dad while entering a refugee camp.
The movie ends as it started, with the mother singing happy birthday to the girl. Unfortunately, now they are celebrating it in a refugee camp and her eyes suggest how unhappy she is. Children are currently living under trauma, indiscriminate shelling and even torture. The video highlights the importance of raising awareness of what is happening to many girls and boys because of the Syrian conflict.
The video finishes with the quote: “Just because it’s not happening here, doesn’t mean it’s not happening”
