Since girls were originally left out of the Millennium Development Goals, The Girl Declaration was created by the Girl Effect and the United Nations Foundation to put girls on the post-2015 development agenda. 508 girls living in poverty across the world contributed with ideas, along with some of the leading development agencies.
The declaration presents five goals: education, health, safety, economic security and citizenship, and how to focus these goals on girls. It also formulates guiding principles to ensure that girls are not forgotten in policy making and planning.
“Don’t forget me because I’m too poor, too distant, too silenced for you to know I am here,” one of the principles states.
The Declaration was first announced in May at the Women Deliver Conference and is launched today on the UN International Day of the Girl.
