This poem is about attitudes that try to define a particular gender, and how different societal labels lead to subtle discrimination.
I was born, and you looked at your weighing scales.
I babbled, she smiled and filled the empty spaces with imaginative tales
You were congratulated, as I was of age with growing chest
And the worried, wrinkled lines became a permanent guest.
I was sent to an unknown place of sweaty streams
To become a part of wet dreams.
I was tied, touched and made a sheet
To cover all that was going down, beneath.
I got names, a daughter, wife, mother, and keep
But you got the pleasures of retreat.
You now sit by the temple, mediating as you are relieved
I carry an unknown seed of deficient belief
You stay out, and walk freely to handle the matters of world,
I am pushed each night, deep inside, to carry the burden called ME.
Very well written Minal. So true of what goes on in this world.
Thanks a lot Janki 🙂
