Option 6: Eat Fewer Hamburgers

If you’re looking for a snapshot of where we’re at on climate change, take a look at this helpful and entertaining flowchart by ClimateDesk. Catering for presidents, mad scientists and individuals alike, it presents three serious options (and one not-so-serious one) that are being considered at a governmental level to counteract the effects of climate change – and why they are or are not being enacted.

Perhaps more importantly, it lists several small steps we can all take to change our habits for the better. Some you’ll have heard before – recycle, and use fuel-efficient transport where possible – but others are less obvious, such as eating fewer hamburgers to reduce demand for climate-intensive foods. The conclusion to this section is somewhat depressing, with climate economist Frank Jotzo arguing that policy is needed to drive mass behaviour because “you’re not going to get a lot of people taking voluntary action at once.”
