More than 2,000 images of sexual assault survivors holding posters with quotes from their attackers have been posted on Project Unbreakable since its launch in October 2011. These powerful pictures do not only help survivors of sexual assault heal from the traumatic experience they had to go through, it also helps those suffering in silence by creating awareness on issues surrounding sexual assault.
Twenty-one year old Grace Brown founded this project two years ago after a friend told her about the sexual assault she went through. With a passion for photography, the young activist started taking pictures of people that had been sexually abused in an attempt to make their situation visible to the world. This initiative is a great response to the lack of liable statistics. Many sexual assault cases remain unreported due to stigma and fear and therefore statistics vary considerably. According to the The Rape, Abuse & Incest National network 54% of sexual assault cases in the United States are not reported to the police. They say reporting to the police is key to preventing this far to common problem.
