If you haven’t already seen this video then you need to stop EVERYTHING you are doing right now. Watch it. I can guarantee it will be the most powerful thing you will watch this year!
The video is of three American teenagers, all either 16 or 17 years old, reciting a poem called ‘Somewhere In America’ that they wrote themselves about the true face of America. It brings light to many situations that people don’t know about, such as the fact that some states have banned books such as Catcher In The Rye because of it’s use of the ‘F’ word. Yet, these same states still allow guns to be carried throughout the streets. Even if you aren’t an American, the poem still hones in on some hard-hitting truths about society today.
The group was formed as part of a non-profit organisation based in Los Angeles called ‘Get Lit’, in which they are trying to improve the literacy rate of the city of Los Angeles (currently the second lowest in the US) one powerful poem at a time. This particular poem helped the girls reach third place in a worldwide competition called Brave New Voices that put them in several poetry face-offs against teams from South Africa and Washington DC.
So sit back and prepare to be inspired into action by these fascinating young women.
