Over the summer, Cancer Research UK has hosted a wide range of fundraising runs all over the country. Their ‘Race for Life’ events began as early as April/May and go on until October, with women from all walks of life coming together to show their support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
But now something different is taking shape in the fight against cancer. Students have turned up the heat and are preparing to take to the streets in aid of raising money for the fundraising campaign Stand Up To Cancer – and they’re doing so in nothing but their underwear.
It has been reported that students from 32 universities in the UK will be taking part in the “Undie Run” between 17 and 29 October and each university has set a fundraising target of £5,000, although they are hoping donations will exceed their targets.
Tasha Kleeman, who is organizing Edinburgh University’s Undie Run, told The Huffington Post UK:
“Although the concept of running in underwear can be a difficult one to sell, people have been really enthusiastic. I’m aiming to get at least 100 runners, and hopefully many more.”
As of 15 October, 227 Undie Runners were registered to take part in the event, with Edinburgh having the largest team of 39 runners.
“Students are all too often labelled as apathetic, lazy and uncharitable, and this is a great opportunity to prove that wrong. Running in underwear may seem like a trivial way to achieve this, but in fact, the Undie Run allows students to get out of their comfort zone to raise a lot of money for charity, which essentially is what fundraising is all about.”
This will be the first year that the event is taking place. Claire Rowney, Director of Stand Up To Cancer, has expressed that she has no doubt that the students of Britain will rise to the challenge to make the event highly popular.
