How does it feel to be a refugee? For most of the “Western” world, that’s always going to be an unanswerable question. As unstable as the European and American economies and governments may get, the chances of war breaking out on either continent is unspeakably slim. Obviously, this is not so in other regions of the world. Figures from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has placed the total number of refugees at 15.4 million, at the end of 2012. Syria, specifically, has 2.1 million people “at risk”, with about 2 million registered refugees (a informative graphic well worth looking at). The world can only estimate at how many unregistered or internally displaced peoples there are actually seeking refuge from conflicts. How can anyone from an internally peaceful nation possibly wrap their head around the experiences these refugees have gone through?
Faced with that impossible question, Amnesty International has released a YouTube video depicting what things would be like were the roles reversed. Fleeing from the UK to a sub-Saharan nation as Britain rips itself apart in some conflict, the narrator struggles with the experiences of the refugee process. Terrified? Yes. Persecuted? Absolutely. Hopeless? Probably.
While this video may not be able to replicate the experiences of the modern day refugee, maybe it helps and is definitely worth watching.
